This was an interesting project commisioned by
the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra. I was asked to create a series of transpositions
for certain woodwinds and brass. The original parts, prepared by the engraving
masters of the late-19th/early-20th century, were scored for instrumets that are
uncommon in today's orchestra (i.e. Clarinet in C, Trumpet in E, or 1st Trombone
reading tenor clef). For the professional player, these transpositions are little,
if any, trouble to make at sight. For the young perfomer, however, this could
be problematic, so the written transpositions become necessary. Furthermore, because
these parts would be entering a music-lending library, I wanted to emulate the early 20th Century
style and layout of the original engravings, so they would match their counterparts.
